Swimplicity is a learn-to-swim curriculum that places an emphasis on the learner's basic relationship with the water. It uses the qualities of that relationship as both the swimmer's primary safety system and the foundation of all aquatic activities. Swimplicity focuses on a series of specific, playfully-directed aquatic activities that use the water's natural forces to influence brain development, sensory awareness and integration, motor control and learning as well as social development in children and adults.
Swimplicity's Goal
Swimplicity's goal is to provide children and adults the opportunity to experience the aquatic environment in a safe and fulfilling way. This is achieved by creating an intimate relationship with water.
Simple aquatic body shapes in which a person imitates the letters "X," "Y" and "I (Photo #1) and objects such as a pencil (Photo #2) and ball plus an aquatic signature (Photo #3) are the foundations of these aquatic relationships.
From these body shapes, one can first learn to manage aquatic forces for safety, then use aquatic forces for propulsion.
Breathing is the key to complete comfort in the aquatic environment. Being able to submerge, release air, surface at the interface and accept air rhythmically in a relaxed confident manner is critical to building an intimate relationship with the water.
This relationship is achieved through an awareness and manipulation of water's natural forces. Students can learn first to manage these aquatic forces and then use these same forces for propulsion.
The Swimplicity philosophy originated from years of observation with competitive swimmers. Bill Boomer, Milt Nelms and Edie Flood collaborated on their observations over the years to effect change and influence swimming approaches worldwide using the Swimplicity philosophy.
Their recognition of predominant systematic errors in common swimming movement patterns led them to re-examine a swimmer's relationship with the water as the essential problem. They realized that a change in basic swimming philosophy needed to be instituted at the initial stages of human/water interaction.
Together, Bill, Milt and Edie-over the course of the past three years-have combined their swimming knowledge and experience to develop the Swimplicity(TM) Learn to Swim program, which is now trademarked.
It is a curriculum that uses-rather than confronts-the laws of nature. The curriculum is not limited to swimming movements, but is designed to create experiences to stimulate and develop all of the human systems, including the sensory/nervous, physical/motor, emotional and cognitive realms (Photo #4).

Bayeux Tapestry - The Norman Conquest Immortalised

One of the oldest and most unique tapestries in the world is the magnificent Bayeux Tapestry. It stretches to more than 70 metres long and depicts the story of the events leading to William the Conqueror’s invasion of England in 1066 and the Battle of Hastings. The tapestry is currently displayed in a purpose built museum in France.
The Bayeux Tapestry is not technically a tapestry but an intricate embroidery. Stitched in eight colours of woollen thread on linen it has survived for more than 900 years and is the only surviving relic detailing this significant historic event.



Origins and aesthetics
The exact origin of the Bayeux Tapestry has never been truly confirmed, however most of the historical evidence now points to Bishop Odo, the half brother of William the Conqueror, as the original commissioner of the masterpiece around 1070. This intriguing work of art was displayed in the Cathedral of Bayeux for a further 700 years where it served as a way of depicting the story of the conquest to the illiterate and uneducated masses.
Originally the embroidery was made from eight sections of linen which were then joined together. The stitching was worked in wool using couched work, stem, chain and split stitching. In sharp contrast to other examples of medieval embroidery the scenes stand out clearly against the linen and depict the events leading to the Norman Conquest and defeat of King Harold by William the Conqueror, and ends with the Battle of Hastings itself.
Inspiring NapoleonThe Bayeux Tapestry has served as an inspiration to Napoleon Bonaparte during his war against the English and he ordered the tapestry to be transported to Paris, apparently to motivate his planned attack on England which never occurred. The tapestry returned unscathed to the people of Bayeux, not for the first time. During the French Revolution the masterpiece ended up as a wagon cover until, rather fortuitously it was recognised and returned. This led the citizens to form an arts council to protect the work.
Northern France was devastated during both World Wars and the tapestry found itself hidden away during that time. It is now on display in Bayeux. The town of Bayeux was one of the first to be liberated during the Second World War by the Allies. Rather poignantly, the war cemetery at Bayeux has an inscription on the memorial to allied forces in Latin which translates as, “We the descendents of the people conquered by William, liberated his homeland.”
The story within the tapestry
On the surface the tapestry depicts a historical event. Looking in depth at the characters, the armour and the expressions, one sees much more. Each scene is a work of art in itself and could stand alone as a story in isolation. The work has a timeless appeal to generations, probably explained by hidden meanings, and the character woven into the fabric itself.
In one scene as William sets out for battle the tapestry appears to give an impression of gathering momentum as horses charge across the linen, an anticipation of the devastating events to come. The violence of war is evident in the depictions of fallen soldiers, horses, weaponry and the expressions on the faces. In another scene great detail is placed on the shipping, some decorative, others with emblems and mast heads, all adding to the preparation of and anticipation of events to come.
A captivating work of art
The Bayeux Tapestry has timelessly appealed to people for hundreds of years and has relayed a tale of a momentous battle and conquest to generations. On the one hand the brutality of war and humanity is displayed, on the other the artistic appeal of the masterpiece itself. Yet again there are still many unanswered questions about this work of art that will continue to intrigue and fascinate for many years to come.

Alexandra Nechita - Makes Art Really Good

On a recent Princess cruise my wife and I decided to go to the art auctions since this particular trip had a lot of sea days. We were introduced to Alexandra Nechita pieces, both originals and numbered reproductions. We watched several videos about her in our cabin. At first we were quite taken in by the whole story and her Picasso-style paintings. But by the end of the trip I was soooo over her, and wondering if the whole thing is a sham.
I guess that would naturally lead to the question of whether Picasso himself was a sham. I mean this style of artwork reminds me of LSD-induced hallucinations while staring at a colorful carpet. It’s that imagery from the mind’s third eye captured in a still shot, and I guess that’s why it’s considered genius. But is it really any good, or is it only good because everybody else says it’s good?



It isn’t really fair to compare Picasso to Nechita. I have been to the Picasso museum in Barcelona and it takes you through the periods of his life. The man was a brilliant portrait and landscape painter much of his career. He developed the abstract style which he is so popular for slowly over the course of years. It was the final segment of his legacy, but is what he became famous for. So he was actually a well-rounded painter.
Nechita started off by painting that style. I mean, right out the gate like when she was five years old. They called her a child prodigy, a genius. She didn’t even see Picasso’s work until after she started having shows of her own work. It’s said that the first time she saw his paintings she tugged on her mother’s dress and said “Mommy look! That man paints like I do!”
Cute story, yes. And the paintings do have a uniform quality with good use of colors. But are they worth tens of thousands of dollars? Are they really pleasant to look at? Or do the people who buy them just collect paintings because certain artists are trendy? Are her paintings the emperor’s new clothes? Do those crazy half-cocked images with heads sticking out of shoeboxes and kindergarten-like hands constitute quality art any more than your kid’s crayon drawings on the refrigerator? I guess the answer is in your own eyes. Providing, of course, you have the ability to use them in an unbiased and purely observational manner.
By the way if you are interested in collecting art and buying it right, you can’t do better than on those Princess cruises. The exact same pieces are going to cost hundreds, thousands, even tens of thousands more from land-based galleries. That doesn’t mean the land-based galleries are ripping you off – they have high overhead and are in the art business. These principles are simple, and don’t require the kind of visual talent you’d need to paint the Sistine chapel, by any stretch of the imagination. In fact, they don’t require as much talent as taking good pictures to understand and apply.

The first thing you need to think about when you are arranging things on a page—in this case, you’re arranging pictures and text to make a photo book—is how arrange the elements on the page. This includes thinking about what stuff goes on which page, and where to put it relative to the other elements. That is an important notion—the notion that things are placed relative to other elements. Graphic designers think not only about the elements they put on the page, they think about the arrangement in terms of what those elements, as shapes, do in terms of giving the page structure.
If you really want your pages to look aesthetically pleasing, you should think about the shapes that the elements make out of the empty space that remains on the page. This is called negative space, and your first priority is to make sure the pages of the photo book you are creating look organized. One way to do this is to think of the page in terms of a grid. The grid is never visible in the finished page, but think of your favorite newspaper. Think of how the columns, the photos and the headlines are arranged. Even though you don’t actually see the grid itself, you can look at the pages of this newspaper and know where the grid is, can’t you? Acute renal failure or ARF is characterized by a rapid onset of renal insufficiency/failure, reduction in glomerular filtration rate and renal plasma flow, and the clinical and biochemical aftermath of the excretory failure. This is a serious form of kidney disease where the dog's kidney quit working all of a sudden and that commonly leads to death. The kidneys have an abrupt decrease in the GFR due to a toxin or loss of adequate blood supply (called ischemia). The excretory failure is identified by rapid (hours to days) increases in BUN, serum creatinine and phosphate, and variable hyperkalemia and metabolic acidosis. Acute renal failure is a tenuously reversible state, which must be diagnosed quickly and aggressively treated. Failure to initiate therapy may result in irreversible parenchymal damage or death. Acute renal failure is frequently a complication of other surgical or medical diseases and must be recognized within the clinical features of these associated disorders.

Common clinical signs of kidney failures in dogs are loss of appetite, depression, vomiting, diarrhea, very bad breath, pale gums and ulcers in the mouth. While the consistent signs of severe ARF include the sudden onset and rapid development of listlessness, depression, anorexia, vomiting, and diarrhea. Oliguria and less frequently anuria were at one time considered signatures of ARF and discriminators for chronic renal failure. Some causes of ARF are due to low blood pressure or a decrease in blood volume, lack of blood supply to the kidneys, a urninary blockage or dogs in-take of some poisonous plants or toxins, most notably the antifreeze ( 95% ethylene glycol) which are catastrophic to the kidneys. Antifreeze is very sweet tasting and is readily licked by both dogs and cats if it spills on the ground when car antifreeze is changed. Ethylene glycol is converted in the liver and kidney to a toxic metabolite that changes the pH of the bloodstream and destroys the kidneys by depositing calcium oxalate crystals in the renal tubules.

It is a medical emergency and requires specific and immediate measures if the kidneys are to be saved. Unfortunately, unless a pet owner actually observes their pet licking antifreeze, they don't bring their pet in for care until it is very ill. Treatment of renal kidney disease is aimed at preventing or slowing further kidney damage. One phase to treat kidney is to "restart" it. The large quantities of intravenous fluids are given to "flush out" the kidneys. This flushing process, called diuresis, helps to stimulate the kidney cells to function again. If enough functional kidney cells remain, they may be able to adequately meet the body's needs for waste removal. Fluid therapy includes replacement of various electrolytes, especially potassium. Other important aspects of initial treatment include proper nutrition and drugs to control vomiting and diarrhea. The possible outcome of these treatment, the kidneys will resume functioning and continue to function for a few weeks to a few years.

Also the kidneys will resume functioning during treatment but fail again as soon as treatment stops or maybe the kidney will not return. Another phase of treatment is to keep the kidneys functioning as soon as possible. First method, the dog will undergo a speical diet which the food contains low in protein, low in phosphorus, and not acidified. Another method is a phosphate binder where phosphorous is removed from the body by filtering through the kidneys and once the filtration process is impaired, phosphorous begins to accumulate in the blood. Another process is giving a drug to regulate the parathyroid gland and calcium levels. Calcium and phosphorus must remain at about a 2:1 ratio in the blood.

The increase in blood phosphorus level stimulates the parathyroid gland to increase the blood calcium level by removing it from bones. Once the dog is stabilized, fluids can be given under the skin (subcutaneously). This serves to continually "restart" the kidneys as their function begins to fail again. This is done once daily to once weekly, depending on the degree of kidney failure. Another option is kidney transplants and dialysis and becoming more accessible for pets today, but due to the high costs, aren’t practical for most pet owners. Many cases that the dogs with renal failure are successfully managed and live long happy lives. Common prevention of such dog diseases it to have a regular laboratory testing preformed with the yearly vet visit can help to detect early stages of renal failure before they appear, and starting early treatment can help to slow or halt loss of kidney function to improve the pet's quality of life.

Tips to Make a Stained Glass Effect Halloween Paper Lantern

Make a beautiful stained glass effect Halloween Lantern, a beautiful Halloween decoration for any room. Made from a paper lampshade which will fit and ceiling light. To make the stained glass effect paper lantern you will need... A ball shaped paper lamp shade/lantern in any size you wish. Felt tip pens, black paint.
You need to create a design for the lantern. Draw the design on a sheet of paper. You could use Pumpkin Patterns to give you some ideas. You can get around 3 designs on one lantern.
Once you are happy with the design you can start work on the lantern itself. First you will need to erect the paper lantern. It should have assembly instructions with it. Unfold the lantern and insert a wire expander inside the lantern, this slots into place and keeps the lantern erect and taught.

Take a black felt tip pen or a marker and draw the design on to the paper lantern. Be careful when you are doing this because the lantern is made of paper and the wet ink makes the paper fragile. If your pen does accidentally 'go through' stick a small piece of paper on the hole to patch it up and leave it to dry.
Once your design is complete, paint the background of the lantern black. This is so that the lantern blocks out some of the light. Again you need to take care not to puncture the paper. Use two brushes to paint the lantern, a thin brush for small and detailed areas, and a thick brush for large areas.
Top Tip - Paint from the top of the lantern to half way down, and leave to dry. Then turn upside down and paint the other half. Use a dish to stand the lantern on, it stops it from moving and raises it up from the work surface.
For best results, give the lantern two coats of black paint.
Once the paint work is dry, you're ready to apply the stained glass effect. With coloured felt tip pens, colour in the white areas of your design on the paper lantern. Again take care.
Now hang the lantern up from a ceiling light in your home. Every time the light is turned on your delightful design will glow like a stained glass window in a church. The lantern is a fun and unusual Halloween decoration.
A spooky tip: Use glow in the dark paint on your design so that when the light is turned off, your spooky Halloween lantern will glow.
Do not use a higher wattage bulb in the lantern than indicated with the lantern instructions and packaging.

Winter - Whitetails and Ground Blinds

would like to paint you this wonderful picture that I enjoy hunting December whitetails purely for the ambiance of the winter woods, but for this bowhunter, the obvious sign of beaten down winter trails gives this archer the advantage of not having to try and guess where the deer may be. Yes, any advantage to put myself into a position to fill my tags is welcome.
Many a winter evening was spent precariously perched twenty feet of the ground, shivering and somewhat miserable waiting for a deer which would ultimately end up seeing or hearing me as I tried to draw my bow. Several years ago, in an effort to try and swing the odds in my favor, I adapted a new approach to hunting winter whitetails; hunting out of ground blinds. I know what you’re thinking, “That sure is some great insight, oh mighty outdoor writer guy, portable hunting blinds have been around for years.” While questioning any tips I suggest may be wise, at least entertain my thought here anyway. I have tried hunting out of the “traditional” style hunting blinds in the winter, but I have found concealment and fooling the wary senses of a whitetail difficult.



Most deer blinds manufactured today are constructed with dark, green or fall patterns in mind. With a backdrop, consisting of predominantly white, more deer than not noticed the blind and knew something just wasn’t right. While the blind may not have scared them into the next county, deer were certainly on edge. Thus creating a situation where only a risky shot, at best, could be attempted. I have found however, a white-camo pattern ground deer blind very effective for late-season whitetails.
These snow camo deer hunting blinds give you the opportunity to hunt out of the blind the same evening you set it up, which is difficult to do with ground blinds designed for fall use. Most of the deer I have harvested out of the blind have been the same evening I set it up. Most often, I try and tuck the blind in a brush pile – they just don’t seem to pick it up. White and snow pattern clothes are necessary in order to blend in, and you do have to be cautious of movement while deer can see through your shooting holes. The prospect of getting out of your tree stands allows you the opportunity to hunt places you may not have been able to before, plus allows the flexibility to move in reaction to wind directions.
Ground blind hunting does much to camouflage and comfort a late-season hunter. December hunts are an unbalanced mix of many hours of enjoying well, the solitude of the winter woods, with sporadic moments of deer activity. Thus, you need to be comfortable during those inevitable times of waiting. Hidden inside the blind, gives you the opportunity to bundle up with heavy clothes that would otherwise curtail any attempt at drawing and shooting your bow, which can be a problem with more traditional deer stands. As you see deer coming, you can simply remove the gloves, and, if need be, a coat to prepare for your shot.
Keeping that winter wind off you also does much to both control body temperature and minimize scent distribution. You will certainly stay warmer hunting out of a blind, which will mean more time in the field and a better opportunity to hunt when late season hunting is at it’s best; the colder the better.
While a tree-stand may be your best bet in some late-season hunting situations, incorporating ground blinds concealed with a snow pattern may do much to improve your December bow hunting success. Come December, while many of you are perched precariously in a leafless oak tree, shivering and questioning your sanity, I’ll be on the ground in relative comfort, totally concealed, wishing I could see farther.

Jerry then began to wonder about all the human activities that coyotes observe and what those observations might mean to a really quick-witted coyote. It was at that moment that Sparky the Coyote entered Jerry's life.

" SPARKY'S TAVERN"
Coyotes have always been recognized for their intelligence and quick thinking and sometimes mischievous behavior. One such coyote goes by the name of Sparky. Sparky has spent a large amount of time studying people and trying to find out what makes them tick.
Sparky's interest in people started merely as a means to ensure his own longevity, but soon he began to learn that most people were really not that bright and that they were a really uptight lot. Sparky gave a lot of thought to this combination of qualities and the more he thought about it the more he could see the potential enjoyment he could get by putting this knowledge to practice. At first it was just a little joyriding in "borrowed" government vehicles. This lead to acquiring U.S. National Park Service and U.S. Bureau of Land Management uniforms. Sparky found tourists were happy to take travel directions and even guided tours if he just wore a uniform. This provided great fun for Sparky even though it resulted in lots of lost tourists and some pretty wild tours of the desert.
Sparky discovered that people were pretty goofy about their vehicles and realized cars and trucks and the trailers they pulled offered lots of opportunity for fun.
Have you ever driven through a desert on a moonlit night and thought you must be totally alone. A nice middle-aged couple had that same thought when they pulled their trailer off the road so they could enjoy the beauty of the starlit desert. How were they to know that Sparky the Coyote was wandering through the desert looking for fun….and as always with Sparky…a bit of profit as well.
It didn't take Sparky long to round up enough friends to hijack the trailer. Tying the couple to a nice large cactus was sort of fun because they yelled and screamed a lot The screams were
loud enough to be heard for miles and of course this in itself attracted quite a bit of attention among rabbits, snakes and other desert creatures. Word spread from rabbit to rabbit and snake to snake until the desert was alive with animals and reptiles headed toward the trailer. By the time they arrived the trailer was lit up, drinks were being served and Sparky had sent five snakes to look for a karaoke machine.
Sparky generally charges a dollar for his events and this was the price he charged for entrance into what he called "Sparky's Tavern." Whether drinks and sheep dip were included in the price we don't know but we can easily believe that as the sun was coming up the next morning Sparky was already conjuring up his next event.

When opening a digital photograph on your computer, the displayed image appears in one of two ways. Sometimes the image will appear larger than your monitor can display. But most often the entire image is viewable because the software "scales down" or displays a smaller version automatically. The original image file still has not changed in any way.
Here is where it becomes confusing for anyone just beginning to do digital scrapbooking. Is my image too large? Is it too small? What should I do next?
Remember that pixel dimension (width x height) is stored as part of the digital image file. However, "pixel" not only refers to a point of light inside your stored digital photo. The same word is used to describe a point of light on your computer monitor. Many people are easily confused because the word pixel actually refers to two different technologies.

A monitor pixel is really made up of three subpixels in the colors red, green and blue. The number of pixels in your monitor depends upon your monitor hardware and your monitor resolution setting. Early computer monitors were limited to displaying at a single resolution only. Today monitors are capable of displaying multiple resolutions starting on the low end at 600x480 pixels and going up way past 1900x1200 pixels. If you don't know at what resolution your monitor is set, ask the nearest computer nerd in your household.
If your original picture was stored digitally with a dimension of 1900x1200 pixels, what happens to your picture when your monitor resolution is set to 800x600?
Nothing!
Image software will typically display either the whole image scaled down to fit the screen or will use a one to one mapping of image pixels to display pixels. When changing to a higher monitor resolution, pictures will appear smaller but the image file remains unchanged. A lower monitor resolution makes pictures look larger. Most people never change their monitor resolution once set to their own preference but may notice this effect when viewing the same image on another monitor with a different resolution.
The point is, the resolution of your computer monitor has absolutely no relation to the final size of the printed digital image.
Just as pixel is defined by two different technologies, so too is resolution.
As defined above, resolution refers to the number of horizontal and vertical pixels in a computer monitor. But resolution is also the degree of sharpness of a computer-generated image as measured by the number of dots per linear inch in a hard-copy printout. This is referred to as DPI or Dots Per Inch. Good quality output on any print device requires the DPI be set to 300.
The important thing to remember here is resolution. Why? Because that's how computer software labels this setting. The pixels/inch setting is controlled from the photo editing software image resize dialog. Look for the grey outlined section labeled Document Size or Print Size. There you will see the image settings: Width, Height, and Resolution. When the resolution is changed and saved with the modified image file, this information is communicated to the hard-copy printer.
The image resolution default is 72 pixels/inch, far below the print standard of 300. The resolution defaults to 72 because of standards that were set in the early days of computer monitors and are still followed today.
If you take your flash memory card directly to the local photo processing center without editing any of the photo image files, the photo centers know how to adjust for the discrepancy between 72 and 300 to give you the final printed product. All you have to do is select the size of your photo prints and they take care of all the rest.
However as a digital scrapbooker, you are now editing your photo digitally before printing and if you don't pay attention, the final printed image will turn out wrong. Avoid any print errors by making sure your digital layout with any photo images therein has a resolution set to 300.
There is one other usage of the word "resolution" when referring to digital cameras set to take pictures at a high pixel count. Many people refer to this setting as the resolution of the camera. The word "resolution" used in this way refers to the quality of the camera, as in the greater the resolution, the better the picture.

Get ready to learn digital imaging terms and the basic steps to get a digital image from a camera into a digital scrapbook layout.
Digital scrapbooking, sometimes called virtual scrapbooking, is so easy because the scrapbook page layout is created, simulated, or built by means of a computer. All the visual information that is built into the final digital layout is captured somewhere in digital memory as bits and bytes.
When a picture is taken, a digital camera stores all of the photographic information on a small computer memory chip known as a flash memory card. Digital cameras store digital images in JPEG format which uses data compression. More expensive cameras also use TIFF and RAW formats that use more storage space but give experienced photographers more options in processing the image.



Megapixels is a measure of how many millions of individual photon capturing elements are inside the digital camera sensor. The sensor replaces the film in a traditional camera, as each light element of a picture is translated into thousands of bits per picture or pixels.
Each digital camera has its own settings and firmware (software built into the camera) which determine how the digital picture is stored, that is, how many pixels are used per picture and in what format the pictured is saved. A digital camera set to capture images at the best quality possible will use more pixels per picture and therefore more data storage memory also. Cameras with greater megapixel capacity produce higher resolution photography.
A pixel is another computer term which is short for picture element. In a stored digital image file, a pixel refers to a single point of light in the photograph. In a digital camera that takes 1600x1200 pixel photos, each image contains 1,920,000 pixels or approximately 2 megapixels. Similarly, a 2560x1920 pixel photo stores 4,915,200 pixels or roughly 5 megapixels.
Digital cameras typically come with a cord to connect it directly to a computer. This allows the camera's ability to read the flash memory card to be used in conjunction with computer software.
Alternatively, the memory card can be removed from the camera and placed into a card reader already connected to a computer. Some computers come with internal card readers that have multiple slots for different memory card formats. For my SD memory card, I bought a cheap USB device that allows me to plug my flash memory card into my computer USB port.
Using either method above, you can now open digital image files from where they are stored on the flash memory card and save the files on your hard drive. The copied images on the hard drive becomes the original source for all future work done with these digital images. Once you are assured that you have successfully copied the images to the hard drive, the flash memory card can now be reused to take more photos.
I have a folder (or directory) on my hard drive called camera downloads. This is where I keep all of my original digital image files. When I want to do more work with a particular photo, I make yet another copy of the digital image file into a second folder which is my working directory. This ensures that I always have an original copy because I never want to alter or destroy the original in any way. This is like hanging on to the original negatives from processed film only now it is done in the computer--virtually. That's another plus for digital scrapbooking.
Most important to this entire process is to always make regular backups of all your personal data and digital images from your hard drive to another type of storage medium, be it CD, DVD, tape, online backups or a redundant hard drive.
So let's recap. We took a picture that was stored digitally in the camera's flash memory card. We connected the camera to the computer or we moved the memory card into the computer card reading device. Then we copied the picture from the memory card to the camera downloads folder on the computer hard drive. And for future processing, we made another copy of the picture into our working folder. Finally, we've made sure that all our original photos are being backed up on a regular basis to another storage medium.
